Marshall boys stun No. 3 Duncanville
From Staff Reports
PASADENA – Stephon Holland shook off the flu and a bad game to help the Marshall High School basketball team score a marquee victory at the prestigious Texas Invitational Thursday night.
Holland’s 3-pointer with three seconds remaining gave Marshall a 61-60 victory over Duncanville, the No. 3-ranked Class 5A team in the preseason state coaches poll.
Marshall (3-0) already had defeated Kingwood Park Thursday afternoon when it took the court against Duncanville at Dobie High School. The Buffalos led most of the game before Duncanville took an eight-point lead with six minutes to go.
Marshall tied it in the final minute only to see Duncanville regain the lead with 12 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Brandon Chatman drove the lane and kicked out to Holland on the wing.
Holland has been sick, and coach Gary Nichols said he played a bad game against Kingwood Park. One made shot against one of the state’s best programs made everything feel better.
Though basketball fans will announce the Buffalos as major players in the Region III scene now, Nichols downplayed the victory. He said rankings are just opinions.
“We don’t really worry about that,” he said. “We just try to get out and play hard. It’s a good win because that’s a great program. The key is we won a close ball game. That’s more important than anything.”
Nichols added that Tola Olushola played great defense and scored 10 points. Though he was being guarded by 6-foot, 10-inch forward and Baylor commitment Perry Jones, Kittirck Bell scored 19 points. Bell is six inches shorter than Jones.
Marshall advances to the Division I gold bracket where it will play Austin Westlake, the No. 5-ranked team in the preseason coaches poll. That game is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Pearland High School. Bush will play LaPorte at 12 p.m. at South Houston High School.
Win or lose Friday afternoon Bush and Marshall will play again at 7:30 p.m.
Bush advanced to the Division I gold bracket thanks to pool play victories over Mansfield Summit (67-47) and Kingwood (51-44). Against Summit, Cameron Ridley had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. Against Kingwood, Jordan Clark had 14 points and Darius Richardson 13 points.
Hightower lost to Division I pool play games. The Hurricanes (1-2) lost to The Woodlands College Park, 64-49, in the afternoon and to defending state champion DeSoto, 56-43, at night.
Hightower drops into the bronze bracket and will play Kingwood at 9 a.m. at Dobie High School.
Kempner split two games in Division 2 pool play. The Cougars lost to Katy Cinco Ranch, 55-46, in the afternoon then beat Channelview, 70-46, at night. Against Cinco Ranch, Mike Wilson had 18 points, Andre Moore 11 points and Alex Anding nine points. Against Channelview, Wilson had 24 points, Mike Onyecherelam 15 points and Moore 11 points.
Kempner is in the silver bracket and will play Houston Westside at 10:30 a.m. at Sam Rayburn High School.
