Football squads look to advance in playoffs

Oak Ridge running back Torian Oakley and the War Eagles take on undefeated Klein Collins in the Class 5A Division II playoffs at Klein Memorial Stadium tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The Conroe High School football team is looking to go where no Tiger team has gone since 1999.

The Tigers will try to advance to the second round of the playoffs and look to build on a two-game win streak that propelled them into the position they are in to keep their season alive when they take on Westfield (7-3) in a Region II-5A bi-district matchup tonight at Woodforest Bank Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Conroe (5-5) clinched a playoff spot for the third consecutive season with a 46-28 win over College Park last Friday, but the Tigers’ past two playoff runs have been short-lived as they have fallen in the first round both times.

“I think we have some momentum,” Conroe coach Roger Holtkamp said. “Our kids have a lot of confidence right now and I think we’re playing our best football at the right time. The next thing we need to do is win in the first round and see where we can go; that would be a nice thing to do.”

Though the Tigers have failed to make it to the area round in almost a decade, their trips to the playoffs should not be considered failures. Conroe’s last two playoff losses have only been by a combined 12 points.

The playoffs come at the most opportune time for the Tigers this year, too, as the Conroe offense seems to be working on all cylinders, scoring 75 points during their current win steak.

“We’ve played a lot of good competition,” Holtkamp said. “The teams we’ve lost to are 45-5. Our kids and our coaches did a good job of staying together during some of our rough patches. I think we all did a good job of staying together and keeping the end in mind. That’s not easy to do with your back up against the wall there for a long time and it’s a credit to our kids to work through the adversity and reap the rewards.”

Westfield, a former district foe, holds a 10-9 advantage over Conroe in the all-time series between the two teams but they haven’t met since 2003 when both were in District 15-5A.

“District 13-5A (Westfield’s current district) has a lot of good quality teams,” Holtkamp said. “I think our district has improved over the last couple of years and we’ll see how we match up.”

Conroe’s offense has been paced by running back Darrell Thomas. Over the past two games, Thomas has a combined seven touchdowns.

“We need to continue to execute like we have been,” Holtkamp said. “Both our offense and defense have done a great job these past two games; we need to keep that up.”

Westfield comes into tonight’s matchup with a high-powered offense led by quarterback Jacoby Walker.

Walker, a Kansas University commit, has 1,972 yards passing on the season and 21 touchdowns compared to only four interceptions.

“It will help us if we get some turnovers early,” Holtkamp said. “If we can go up early, that will help put us in control of the game.”

The winner of this game will advance to play the winner of the Round Rock Westwood-Cy Woods contest next week in the area round of the playoffs.

Westfield is also currently on a two-game win streak coming into tonight’s matchup and the Tigers know how big it will be to get a win and move on.

“I think our kids are playing well at the right time,” Holtkamp said. “I think they are playing together and I think team chemistry is a big part of that. They’re not being selfish and they know they have a chance to do something special for their school and we’re proud of that. I think we’re in a great position right now.”

Oak Ridge at Klein Collins

Oak Ridge reached the playoffs with crucial wins over College Park and New Caney and will attempt to get past the first round with a win over Klein Collins tonight.

Oak Ridge’s (5-5) two district wins ended up being just enough to get them into playoffs and the War Eagles will try to take advantage when they travel to take on Klein Collins.

War Eagle running back Torian Oakley finished the season with 1,030 yards after crossing the 1,000-yard barrier last week against Lufkin.

Klein Collins (10-0) comes into tonight’s matchup with District 13-5A’s leading rusher, JaMichael Rozier, who has 1,354 yards on the season.

The winner of this game will next play the winner of the Cy-Creek-Leander bi-district game next week in the area round.

Tonight’s game is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Klein Memorial Stadium

The Woodlands at Klein Forest

The Highlanders face their first test on what they hope to be a long run in the playoffs when they travel to play Klein Forest Saturday.

The Woodlands (10-0) won the District 14-5A championship and finished the regular season at No. 3 in The Associated Press’ state high school poll but will have its hands full when it takes on District 13-5A third-place Klein Forest.

The Highlanders cruised into the playoffs after dismantling New Caney 45-8 in their regular season finale.

Running back Daniel Lasco sat out last week’s game but still finished atop the district in rushing yards with 1,329 on the year.

Pacing the Golden Eagles (7-3) will be their running back, Matt Davis, who has 1,254 yards on the season to go along with a district-best 21 touchdowns.

The last time the two teams met was in 2005, when Klein Forest knocked off The Woodlands 21-7.

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance to the area round to face the winner of the Cy Falls-Round Rock Stony Point contest.

Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at Klein Memorial Stadium.

TWCA at Shiner St. Paul

The Woodlands Christian Academy will look to advance to the second round of the TAPPS playoffs when it travels to take on Shiner St. Paul tonight.

The Warriors (5-4) finished the season in fourth place in Division IV District 4 to sneak in the playoffs but will look to prove themselves when they take on the Division IV District 3 champions.

TWCA’s Troy Williams will lead the Warrior offense. Williams was one of the area’s most versatile players this year, with 1,407 yards passing and 1,283 yards rushing to go with 34 total touchdowns.

Shiner St. Paul (7-2-1) comes into tonight’s game on a six-game win streak after defeating Hallettsville Sacred Heart last week 29-28.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Comanche Stadium in Shiner.
