Klein tennis takes second at state

Updated: 11.08.09
It was a good weekend for Klein High tennis players – past and present.

The Bearkats finished second at the UIL Class 5A Team Tennis Championships on Saturday at the University of Texas in Austin; it was their best finish since 1991 when they won the state title.

Klein had advanced to the state tournament in 2007 and 2008 but lost in the semifinals both times.

The UIL is celebrating its 100th year anniversary and honoring teams of the past. Team tennis started in 1983, and the first team to win the state title was Klein High; they were honored on Saturday.

The current group of Bearkats edged Lubbock Coronado, 10-9, in the state semifinals before losing to defending state champion New Braunfels, 10-2, in the state championship.

“It was a really close match,” Klein coach Holly Cannon said of the semifinal matchup. “They surprised us a lot in doubles. The boys came through with a bunch of singles wins.”

Last spring, then-juniors Ariel Morton and Micah Hermsdorf won the state girls doubles championship for Klein; Morton missed last weekend’s tournament with an injury, but Hermsdorf played.

Cannon said the Bearkats were much more competitive against New Braunfels than the final margin showed.

“The score was 10-2, but the match was a lot closer than that,” she said. “We really did match up well with them.”

The Klein boys doubles team of Rasaki Gbadamosi and Shrinath Kadamangudi defeated NB’s Patrick Fumagalli and Brandon Davis, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and the Klein girls doubles team of Kaysie Hermsdorf and Princess Gbadamosi defeated Caitlyn Barber and Liza Fieldsen, 6-4, 6-3.
