Montgomery County Food Bank honors founding member

A founding board member couldn’t hold back the tears when she learned the building for the organization she helped mold will now bear her name.

The Montgomery County Food Bank’s building, located on 111 S. Second St. will be called The Betty Joyce Hardy Building.

“I don’t deserve all this,” Betty Hardy said during the MCFB’s inaugural open house to kick off its season of giving. “Thank you all so much.”

Her recognition came as a surprise, but MCFB board members soon gave enough clues through words honoring her that she figured it out before she received the formal award.

“She has the tenacity of a pioneer, the heart of a servant and a commitment to a job that has no end,” board member Claudia Hohlt said.

Board member Nancy McCoy said Hardy is “at her best when things are worse” and she never once thought praise for her actions.

In May 1985, Hardy helped start the Montgomery County Food Bank by collecting food and monetary donations, said Doris Golemon, MCFB executive director. Now, the food bank feeds approximately 32,000 people a month. This year, 4 million pounds of groceries will be dispersed throughout the county to people in need.

“I hope I‘ve made some difference, but it really took all these people,” said Hardy, pointing to all the board members, staff and other patrons of MCFB.

The growth of the food bank over the years shows what one person can do, MCFB President Mitch Eichelberger said.

Other individuals recognized for their efforts to help the MCFB were Joanne Ducharme, who heads the Community Development Block grants for Montgomery County, and the Cut-n-Shoot HOG chapter, which consistently donates money and food to the MCFB.

Sheriff Tommy Gage said that being blessed allows people to give back to people in their community and he thanked everyone present for their support during an opening statement.

“Hunger is a problem worldwide, but we need to first take care of those here at home,” Gage said.

Golemon said now is a critical time and that despite all the work the MCFB does, 20,000 people go hungry in Montgomery County each night.

“We are feeding more people than we’ve ever fed before and we’re still not meeting demand,” she said.

The MCFB needs food, money and volunteers. Anyone interested should call (936) 539-6686 or visit the website www.montgomerycountyfoodbank.com. Donations can be sent or delivered to Montgomery County Food Bank, 111 S. Second St., Conroe, TX 77301.

" This is a good example of a person who 'blooms where she was planted!' She saw a need and did something without all the usual things/thoughts that keep a person from really doing something. All the excuses--not enough time, not enough money, it won't work, it is impossible, no one will help, we can't do this--etc. were not used. She just began and kept going. Such a wonderful example of a caring, loving person who make a difference. "
