Rates debated for West U’s ‘neatest pool around’

West University Place’s new Recreation Center is rapidly taking shape. Mechanical infrastructure is in place and according to parks director Tim O’Connor, “The April 1 deadline looks very doable.”
“It’s going to be the neatest pool around,” gushed Russ Schulze, chairman of the Parks & Recreation Board.
Now the board has to debate what is expected to be overwhelming demand for time in the new facility, as well as the soon-to-be reconstructed Colonial Park Pool, with a reasonable fee schedule.
“The direction on this is that we’re going to find ways to simplify things,” said Schulze at Wednesday night’s board meeting.
A parks board subcommittee is in the early stages of determining how much to charge city residents for access to the new pools, juggling community sentiment. One thing the subcommittee is finding sensitivity to is the significant senior population that uses West U aquatics, keeping in mind that through the past summer, residents over 65 were able to swim for free.
“We’ll try to recognize the seniors and their concerns,” said Schulze.
O’Connor noted that the reopening of Colonial is still on target for Memorial Day 2010, though the recent rains have delayed engineers slightly on their construction.
