Missouri City to host community garage sale this weekend
By DIANE TEZENO
Area bargain shoppers will be able to take advantage of a one-stop shopping opportunity in Missouri City as the city hosts its Annual Community Garage Sale and Craft Show.
The event will be held on Saturday, from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 1522 Texas Parkway on the City Hall Complex.
In its sixth year, the annual community garage sale has attracted hundreds of area bargain hunters in the past and similar crowds are expected this year.
"A large crowd is expected, so you may want to come early to get the best bargains,” Recreation Specialist Jennifer Milam said.
For participating vendors, the annual sale presents an opportunity to clean out their homes and garages of items no longer in use.
For area shoppers, the event is an opportunity to save gas and browse for possible bargains right in their own neighborhood.
More people are frequenting garage sales and flea markets in the current economy based on a Consumer Mind Reader Survey conducted by American Research Group and UBS Global Equity Research.
The two organizations conducted a phone survey of 1,000 consumers in May 2009 that showed an increase in the number of shoppers patronizing garage sales and flea market in the current recession, according to the ARG web site.
Growing interest in such sales also is evidenced in Missouri City as a result of a sold out number of booths at this year’s event.
One hundred vendors will man indoor and outdoor booths to showcase a variety of wares, including clothing, household goods, computers, purses and toys at this weekend’s sale.
A number of vendors also will sell handmade crafts and jewelry and holiday decorative items.
