5K walk/run to benefit pediatric brain tumor research
By JENNIFER SUMMER
Addison Faith Bender was always all smiles, even when she was at her sickest undergoing chemotherapy for a brain tumor.
She was diagnosed with an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor in June 2007 and lost her battle with the disease in December 2007, a few weeks shy of her second birthday, Jan. 2.
To help raise money for a foundation in memory of Addison, Addi’s Faith Foundation, her parents organized a “Walk by Faith” 5K walk/run for the community to join and have fun on Nov. 8 at Alexander Deussen Park in Summerwood.
“We have had almost 350 people sign up for the walk and we are always accepting more teams and walkers who want to get out and walk for a good cause,” Amber Bender, Addi’s mom, said.
Local businesses have stepped up to the plate to be sponsors and the foundation is still accepting sponsors and donations as well. With this fundraising walk, as with many others, those who start a team can create a fundraising page and have people donate money to their walk or run.
The goal is to reach $15,000 to benefit Addi’s Faith Foundation which will then give a portion of the money to MD Anderson to fund pediatric brain tumor research.
Another portion of the proceeds will benefit families who have a child with cancer because as the Benders understand, the expenses the family incurs for traveling and medical costs can sometimes add an additional strain to the family.
“To describe Addison, she was sweet, easygoing and always had a smile. We are very excited about the walk and all of the support we have received from the community and businesses,” Amber said. “We invite everyone to join us in helping raise money for the foundation in hopes of finding a cure for childhood cancer.”Addison Faith Bender’s Inaugural Walk by Faith 5K Race/Walk:WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 18, 8 a.m.WHERE: Alexander Deussen Park in Summerwood, 12303 Sonnier StreetINFO: Call Amber at 281-361-4730 or log on to www.walkbyfaith5k.org or www.addisfaithfoundation.org.
