The San Jacinto College women’s basketball team announced its 2009-2010 schedule this week, which begins Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at home against Temple College. The squad was also picked to finish ninth in the Region XIV conference by the league coaches.
The 2009-2010 women’s basketball squad will host 13 games during the regular season. SJC has just three games before the start of Region XIV play, including the home opener and the annual San Jac Classic Nov. 20-21, in which San Jac will face Southern University – Shreveport and Collin County Community College.
Region XIV home games include Kilgore College (Nov. 24), Lon Morris (Dec. 5), Tyler Junior College (Dec. 12), Blinn (Jan. 13), Trinity Valley (Jan. 20), Panola (Jan. 27), Paris Junior College (Jan. 30), Jacksonville College (Feb. 6), and Angelina College (Feb. 24). The Angelina game is part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone, a national initiative to raise breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, and in local communities. San Jac will also host Southwestern Christian College in non-conference action on Jan. 6.
“I have high expectations for our team this year,” said second-year Head Coach Eric Taylor. “You can’t always predict what is going to happen, but our goal is to get to the conference tournament, and I think we have the pieces in place to do that.”
San Jac will face the same Region XIV opponents on the road, but will also play at Southern University at Shreveport (Nov. 7), Collin County Community College (Nov. 17) and Temple College (Dec. 2). SJC will also participate in the Murray State College Classic Nov. 12-14 in Tishomingo, Okla.
The 2010 Region XIV tournament will be played March 4-8 at a location to be determined. The national championship tournament once again returns to the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kan., March 16-20, 2010.
San Jac is looking to rebound after a 5-25 season one year ago. Taylor returns seven players this season, including Sheneria Taylor (Houston / Westfield HS), who played in all 30 games as a freshman, and was the second-leading scorer averaging nine points per game.
All San Jac women’s basketball home games are played at Nichols Gymnasium on the San Jacinto College North campus, located at 5800 Uvalde Road in Houston. For a complete 2009-2010 schedule and more information about San Jacinto College women’s basketball, please visit www.sanjacsports.com.
