Schools plan Veteran’s Day celebrations

Local veterans will get special recognition from University of Houston-Clear Lake as it hosts the seventh annual Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 11.

Sponsored by the UH-Clear Lake’s Office of Alumni and Community Relations and supported by area businesses, organizations and volunteers, the event takes place 10:30 a.m. – noon at the university’s Liberty Park and Student Services and Classroom Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd..

As in years past, the celebration will also acknowledge one particular branch of the armed services with this year’s honoree being the U.S. Marines. In addition, the celebration will recognize veterans from the aerospace industry.

This year’s keynote speaker is Walter Cunningham, an astronaut and Marine veteran.

COM celebrates


College of the Mainland will salute area veterans Nov. 10 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the College Library at its ninth annual Veterans Day program. The guest speaker, Mike Williams, senior ride captain with the Southeast Texas Patriot Guard Riders, will recognize service members that have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Brook gradearns Eagle

Clear Brook High School graduate Seth Moore was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouting.

His Eagle Scout Court of Honor and regalia was held on Sept. 12 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Moore is a member of Boy Scout Troop 595 which is also chartered by St. Bernadette Catholic Church. His scoutmaster is Bernard Groce.

Moore began his scouting experience later than most other scouts. He was 13 years old and became a member of Troop 595 in the summer before entering Clear Brook High School as a freshman. He had only 4 1/2 years to obtain the rank of Eagle.

Seth now attends University of Houston and is a member of the Air Force ROTC where his goal is to become a pilot and officer.

Workshop slatedfor teachers

Teachers of gifted children can strengthen their knowledge of the students through a one-day workshop titled “Social Emotional Needs of the Gifted” offered by University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Center for Educational Programs Nov. 7, 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The workshop will be held in room A176 of the university’s Arbor Building, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Fees are $40 per person for members of the Southeast Co-op and $60 for all others. Visit soe.uhcl.edu/BackToTheU.

COM plansnew classes

The College of the Mainland Learning Center in League City offers several classes in November.

A Saturday morning workshop in Photoshop, the popular photo manipulation program, will meet 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 21 through Dec. 12.

An extensive hands-on class for beginners in QuickBooks will be offered Fridays from 8:35 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. Nov. 13 through Dec. 11.

The COM Learning Center offers a Wednesday evening yoga class at Clear Springs High School Nov. 4 through Dec. 2. The class, which meets from 7 to 8 p.m., works to restore health, flexibility and vigor with low impact exercises designed for people of all ages.

No Rules – Just Fun is the theme of a Tuesday evening decorating class at Clear Springs High School that meets 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 10-17. Taught by a professional decorator, the class offers helpful hints, money saving tips and fun ideas for arranging furniture, rooms, lighting and more.
