The fun continues for Tomball, Magnolia
By Jack Marrion
Last week’s local sports activities provided plenty of excitement. Nolan Ryan paid a visit, Concordia Lutheran’s volleyball team advanced to regionals, Rosehill Christian crushed its first district opponent, Magnolia High’s volleyball team reached the playoffs and a Magnolia West runner set a school record.
Then, of course, there was that football game.
The Houston Chronicle took notice of Tomball’s 29-28 victory Friday against Spring Dekaney and one of the players most responsible for it. Senior wideout Jordan Leslie was honored as football player of the week by the Chronicle, following his 184-yard, 13-catch, three-touchdown performance.
(Sports editor’s note: Leslie was credited with 174 yards in The Potpourri, while the Cougars actually passed for 332 yards instead of 252 as erroneously reported.)
While it was an exceptional victory for the team, Leslie certainly displayed why he is a coveted college football recruit.
In terms of drama, it might be difficult for any of this week’s events to match that contest, but there are ample candidates.
Concordia Lutheran had quite a home twinbill Friday with playoff volleyball followed by a football game against rival Northland Christian.
This Saturday the Lady Crusaders host Austin Hyde Park with a state tournament berth on the line. With any luck they’ll also be celebrating a key win for their football team against Lutheran South.
Tomball’s volleyball team could play for the District 13-5A championship. The Lady Cougars host Klein Collins on Tuesday to close the regular season. If Klein Oak also wins Tuesday, the teams will meet later this week to decide first place.
Area cross country runners will compete for regional spots this week. The District 18-4A meet takes place Thursday, followed by the District 13-5A meet Friday.
The Magnolia and Magnolia West football teams are in an almost identical situation this week. Both are 2-3 in District 18-4A and face strong opponents while trying to stay in the thick of the playoff hunt.
The Rosehill Christian football team has a chance to clinch the TAPPS Six-man District 5, Division I title on Thursday at home against Bryan Allen Academy.
The Tomball football team follows last week’s thriller with another district contest against Klein Forest and its high-octane offense.
It’s all part of the fun as the fall high school athletics season speeds to the finish.
