Four of nation’s top kill leaders meet in Baytown tonight

The nationally-ranked San Jacinto College women’s volleyball team begins the final week of the regular season tonight when head coach Sharon Nelson’s club makes the short trip to Baytown to face rival Lee College.

Match time is 6 p.m.

The Ravens will be attempting to use this week of three conference road matches as a momentum builder for the postseason Region 14 tournament that’s set to be held Nov. 7-8.

On paper, it would appear the No. 11 Ravens hold a decided advantage on the unranked Lady Rebels, who will bring a 14-10 record to the match. San Jac sports a 23-7 record.

But these two teams played just last Thursday at Anders Gym and the Ravens were taken to the maximum of five games before prevailing.

The club overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in games to eke out the 17-25, 25-17, 25-27, 25-20, 15-11 victory, ending a four-match Lee winning streak. The Rebels have won seven of their last 10 matches and now with tonight’s match in the Rebels Gym, San Jac knows it can’t give Lee a whole lot of slack and expect to come out victorious.

Three of Lee’s 10 defeats have come at the hands of No. 2 Blinn. Two were 3-0 sweeps, but Lee also forced the Lady Bucs to a four-game match last month.

Tonight’s match will pit four of the nation’s Top-100 kill leaders against each other. San Jac’s Christina Dorch, with 309 kills, leads the group. She’s ranked 27th in the category of kills per set. But it’s her average of 3.12 that has the Friendswood High School product among the nation’s best.

Teammate Alyssa Dibern, a Bay City High School product, is ranked 43rd in the nation with a kills-per-set average of 2.85. She will be gunning for her 300th kill tonight.

Lee is led in the category by Jasmine Marta, a 5-foot-10 freshman outside hitter. She’s ranked 46th in the nation thanks to her kills-per-set average of 2.84. Marta has notched 233 kills on the year.

Then ranked 78th is Tiara Robinson, a sophomore middle blocker from Beaumont Ozen High School. The 6-foot-3 Robinson has 216 kills for the campaign so far.

NOTES: San Jac slipped from 9th to 11th with last week’s Top-20 national poll.. But in terms of victories, only No. 6 Iowa Western Community College had more wins than San Jac.
