Area cross country teams compete in Nike South

Despite rain and chilly temperatures, cross country teams packed Bear Branch Sports Park to compete in the Nike South Invitational Saturday morning.

A total of 960 runners ran in the meet spread out amongst nine divisions, including three boys varsity divisions, two girls varsity divisions, boys and girls junior varsity divisions and boys and girls freshmen divisions.

The Woodlands boys varsity team finished second in the big school division with a score of 57. Boerne Champion won the race with 44 points.

Leading the way for The Woodlands was Nathan Carbajal, who finished seventh with a time of 16:19.


Following Carbajal were teammates Tom Sanderson (ninth, 16:22), Phil Schneider (10th, 16:29), Ross Moulder (15th, 16:33), Tyler Bradley (16th, 16:26), Andrew Scheffey (17th, 16:49) and Joaquin Ortegon (21st, 17:00).

For the Lady Highlanders it was Margo Lyons setting the pace for the second straight week. Lyons finished 14th with a time of 20:06.

Also performing well for The Woodlands girls were Colleen Murray (21st, 20:20), Samantha Thompson (28th, 20:32), Hannah Novelli (29th, 20:40), Ashley Guidot (40th, 20:49), Shelby Hayes (64th, 21:16) and Michelle Creasman (53rd, 21:23).

The College Park Cavaliers had a good showing at the meet. Setting the pace for the boys team was Brian Gohlke, who finished eighth with a time of 16:21.

Gohlke’s teammates were Sean Hodges (37th, 17:29), Corey Sessum (70th, 18:02), Brian Byrd (100th, 18:39), James Watson (101st, 18:40) and Jonathan Henry (120th, 19:72).

For the Lady Cavs, Bree Schrader finished fourth overall with a time of 19:19.

Katie Jensen followed Schrader in 16th with a time of 20:02, then it was Haley Van Klompen (45th, 20:44), and Laurel Bingman (51st, 20:51).

The Oak Ridge boys competed in the varsity Division B race with Edward Ruiz leading the way with a 28th place finish for a time of 18:17.

Andrew Smith finished close behind him in 30th with a time of 18:17. Aaron Willie (55th, 18:53), Pedro Vasquez (68th, 19:15), Walker Burgess (67th, 19:23) and Thomas Morris (99th, 20:29) rounded out the War Eagles team.

For The John Cooper School girls team it was MacKenzie Kimler leading the way with a time of 21:03. Teammate Arielle Coughlin finished with a time of 23:41. Both girls competed in the big school Division A race.
