Kelly coaching team take Mavs under their wings
By ROBERT AVERY
Is it possible for one head coach to handle the schedules of two high schools? It is when that person is going to direct the fortunes of two aquatics programs.
Longtime Sam Rayburn swim coach Robert Kelly will serve as co-head coach for not just the Texans but he has been named the co-head coach for Memorial’s struggling program.
He and his wife Darla, Pasadena High School’s longtime aquatics coach, will co-coach the Mavericks.
With their old digs, Southmore Intermediate School’s natatorium now just a grassy field, Memorial, Sam Rayburn and Pasadena will all share practice time at the Strawberry Park pool.
In the meantime, Robert Kelly announced the schedules for all three programs Tuesday.
It starts tomorrow with the Battleground Challenge at 4 p.m. at Deer Park High School.
November promises to be busy for all three as they’ll open the month by traveling to Texas City for consecutive Tuesday trips. On the third, it will be a girls double dual meet, followed by the boys taking to the water on the 10th.
Pasadena, Rayburn and Memorial will then compete in the first of several Saturday meets when the trio compete at the La Porte Invitational on Nov. 14, starting at 8 a.m.
The month closes with the group returning to Texas City for the annual Turkey Bowl on Nov. 20.
Before the Christmas holidays arrive, the Mavs, Eagles and Texans will travel to Nederland High School on Dec. 12th to compete in the Bulldog Invitational with first splash starting at 10 a.m.
The new year opens with competition at the Cougar Invitational Jan. 8-9 at Aldine Nimitz High School.
After competition at the Stephen Ness Natatorium on Jan. 19, the three programs will be using that as a tune-up for the annual District 22-5A swimming championships at Deer Park High School on Feb. 5 and 6. Regionals will follow a week later at the Don Cook Natatorium.
