Eagles drop first game, but still flying
By CHUCK HLAVA
Clear Lake Christian football coach Robert Smith put it very succinctly when he said that, “There are no moral victories when you lose.”
The Eagles dropped their first game in the 6-man football field to Tomball Rosehill by a 62-36 score last week.
“We were 45-point underdogs and I told them that before the game,” Smith said. “I told them to leave everything on the field, which they did.”
It was a bruising game from start to finish against an undefeated opponent in Tomball, but the Eagles stayed with it.
“They played beyond their size and capability,” Smith added of the Eagles. “Rosehill’s size was much larger than ours but we played them well. We made some mistakes which cost us points but overall I was very proud of our team.”
Rosehill intercepted a couple of Clear Lake Christian passes and ran them back for touchdowns but Smith indicated the Tomball defense was the best they’ve encountered.
“And we still scored 36 points on them,” he said. If there is something the Eagles know how to do, it’s to score points. Now 2-1, Clear Lake Christian has scored 140 points in three games.
Smith cited quarterback/running back Aaron McNeal, wide receiver David Toomey, both seniors for having a standout game.
The Eagles will host Baytown Christian Academy on Friday. The varsity kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
“We don’t know much about them,” Smith said of Baytown’s Bulldogs. “They were playing 11-man football and switched to 6-man this year. It will be an interesting game and we’ll be ready.”
Clear Lake Christian will do some traveling after this next pair of home games. On Sept. 25 the Eagles host Sanchez Charter School but then on Oct. 2, they travel to Round Rock to play Round Rock Christian.
