Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4709

The Voice of Democracy invites students in the ninth through 12th grade to write and record a broadcast script on a patriotic theme, competing for more than $2.5 million in college scholarships and incentives. State winners receive an all expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. and compete for $149,000 in scholarships, with first place receiving $30,000.

Deadline for entries is Nov. 1. This year’s theme is “Does America Still Have Heroes?” The contest is hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4709 in Conroe

The Patriots Pen essay competition provides students in the sixth through eighth grades the opportunity to express their opinion on a patriotic theme and improve their writing skills while they compete for worthwhile awards and prizes. Awards are given at the local, district and state level. The state winners compete for $91,000 in U.S. Savings bonds at the national level. The national winner receives a $10,000 U.S. Savings bond and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Deadline for entries is Nov. 1. This year’s theme is “When Is The Right Time To Honor Our Military Heroes?”

The contest is hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4709 in Conroe.

John Cooper School

The John Cooper School will host Texas Tee Time, the school's 22nd annual golf tournament, Oct. 23. The tournament will be at Gleannloch Pines Golf Club on Champions Forest Drive in Spring for the third consecutive year. Activities beginning with registration and lunch at 11 a.m., followed by golfing that will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. A dinner, raffle drawing, live auction and awards will kick off at 5:30 p.m. The individual tournament entry fee, with dinner, is $300, and tickets to the evening events are $40.

John Grogan will be the featured author at The John Cooper School's fifth annual Signatures Author Series luncheon Nov. 11 at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel. Grogan, author of “Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog,” a number one national bestseller that was made into a major motion picture, is a former Philadelphia Inquirer newspaper columnist and the author of two best-selling books.

The luncheon will also feature local writers, book signings and a silent auction of a chair signed by Grogan. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local organization. Last year's sellout luncheon, featuring chef Anthony Bourdain, resulted in a donation of $5,000 to the Montgomery County Memorial Library System.

The continued success of this event is made possible by sponsorships at varying levels, ranging from $75 for individual seats to table sponsorships at varying levels. For information contact Cooper's Development office at 281-367-0900 x441.

Open House is from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 7 for grades kindergarten, second and fourth and is from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 8 for grades first and third.

Madeley Ranch Elementary

Montgomery Elementary

Open House begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 15.

Stewart Creek Elementary

Open House is from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 8.

Meet the Teacher night begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 3.

Montgomery Junior High

Meet the Teacher night is from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 8.

New Caney Independent School District

Crippen Elementary

Parent Orientation is Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. for third grade, 6:30 p.m. for first grade and 7 p.m. for second grade.

Porter Elementary

Open House will be from 5-5:45 p.m. and 6:15-7 p.m. Sept. 19.

New Caney Elementary

Open House will be from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 3.

The Woodlands Preparatory School

The Woodlands Preparatory School welcomes two new faculty members to its upper school division. Charles Moody brings a wealth of experience to the science department, where he will teach physics and Advanced Placement chemistry.

Teaching integrated physics and chemistry to eighth grade, in addition to sixth-grade earth science, is Jennifer Moody.
