CVISD volunteers walk to reach dropouts

By Staff Reports
Updated: 08.24.09
Channelview ISD is preparing for its second annual Reach Out to Dropouts Walk set for Saturday, Sept. 12, to encourage drop-out students to return to school.

The Reach Out to Dropouts Walk began in Houston ISD five years ago with the support of Mayor Bill White, and has now been adopted statewide. The walk has brought back thousands of students with the help of more than 11,000 volunteers and the continuing work of drop-out prevention specialists.

Staff members at Channelview High School, the Kolarik Center, and Alice Johnson Junior High have already been working to identify potential dropouts. Many of the students can be eliminated from the list because they have simply transferred to other schools, or have moved out of the district. After the first week of school, addresses of students who have not reported back are verified.  Teams of volunteers l then go door-to-door encouraging students to return.  Channelview High School will be staffed on the day of the walk with personnel who can arrange to enroll returning students on the spot.

Last year’s effort in Channelview was aided by nearly 80 volunteers who visited more than 50 homes. Four students returned as a result of those efforts last year, and two of those students have already graduated from high school.

Expectation Graduation is a non-profit 501(c)3 program, established by city of Houston Mayor Bill White and his wife Andrea, to increase the high school graduation rates in Texas through the initiative Reach Out to Dropouts Walk. Founding partners include Houston Independent School District and the Houston A+ Challenge.
