Covenant Christian begins league play with loss
By Keith MacPherson
The Covenant Christian School Lady Cougars kicked off TAPPS 10-2A action by falling in three straight games to lose the match to the Alvin Living Stones Christian School Lions Monday night.
The Lady Cougars dropped the first two games 25-11 and 25-9 before rallying back the final game which they eventually lost 28-26 to bring their record to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in district.
“I thought we came out nervous in the beginning but I thought we play a lot better as the match rolled on,” Covenant head coach Diane Severson said. “I’m really proud of how we pulled together in that third game after losing the first two like we did.”
In that third and decisive game, the Lions roared out to a 4-0 lead before the Lady Cougars made a move of their own, coming back to tie the game at 4-4 culminating with a block by junior Kelly Wiesmann.
The two teams traded points and the Lady Cougars finally took a 7-6 lead on a kill by Katelyn Holm.
The Lions answered back by going 6-3 over the next nine points before Delaney Begin ended a run with a kill of her own.
The Lady Cougars found themselves up 24-22 on the verge of winning their first game of the match but a couple of miscues helped the Lions tie the game 24-24.
Alvin Living Stones scored on the next play prompting Severson to call a timeout.
“I just told them to take it one point at a time from there,” Severson said. “We were playing equally with them at that point. We just needed that one good pass.”
Junior Sarah Lewis responded to Severson’s timeout by adding a kill to tie the game 25-25 but again a couple Lady Cougar miscues cost the team the lead as they went on to lose 28-26.
The first game of the night was controlled by the Lions as they pounced on the Lady Cougars 25-11.
In the second game the Lady Cougars kept it close in the beginning and midway through the game the Lions led 13-8. The Lions pulled away from there scoring nine in a row and the only other point scored by the Lady Cougars came when a Lion hitter spiked the ball out of bounds. The Lions ended up winning that game 25-9.
The Lady Cougars were paced by Wiesmann who led the team with 14 kills while adding two blocks and one ace.
Begin led the team in passing percentage while chipping in five kills as well.
Underclassmen Melissa Walker and Lexi Barnhill also were key contributors for the Cougars.
The Covenant Christian Lady Cougars will be back in action tonight when they play host to the Rosehill Christian School Eagles. Junior varsity begins at 5 p.m. while the varsity is slated to start at 6:30 p.m.
