The Bellaire 7-on-7 football team went 2-2 Friday and Saturday at the Fox Sports Southwest state tournament in College Station.

The Cardinals were one of only seven Houston-area teams to go 2-1 in pool play Friday, but they fell to eventual state semifinalist Cy-Fair, 47-33, Saturday morning in the first round of championship bracket play.

The Bobcats won three games after that before losing to Round Rock Stony Point — which was one of the teams in Pool N with Lamar — in the finals. Cy-Fair and Stony Points qualified to play in the national 7-on-7 tournament in two weeks.

Bellaire head football coach Trey Herrmann said his kids were ready to take the field.

“We did pretty well,” said Bellaire head football coach Trey Herrmann. “Cy-Fair was a real good team, and they kept on winning after they played us. They made it to the finals but I thought the kids did a good job.”

The Cardinals won their first two games — defeating Vista Ridge and Cedar Hill in pool play — and wound up losing by three points in the final pool game to Denton Guyer.

“We did a good job in pool,” said Herrmann. “We were really only one or two plays away from winning all our pool games. But against Guyer, I thought we got tired and we had a couple of little injuries that we had to deal with, so we ended up having a couple of guys playing both ways (on offense and defense) and I really thought fatigue caught up with us.”He said his kids showed outstanding resiliency, rallying to win both of their pool games.

“We got behind in a couple of those games and the kids didn’t panic or hang their heads,” said Herrmann. “It was good to see us come from behind like that. It shows our kids that good things can happen if they keep fighting.”

He said that might be the single biggest characteristic the team has developed in 7-on-7 play over the last month-and-a-half.

“In the past, when things have gone bad for Bellaire, the kids hang their heads and then something else bad happens while they’re hanging their heads and before you know, things are out of hand,” said Herrmann. “But this group, when they’ve gotten down, they’ve not hung their heads. They’ve kept working and kept fighting and I think that might be the most important thing we’ve taken from 7-on-7. When things have gone bad for this group this summer, they’ve come back and made some plays to stop the other team’s momentum. That confidence is very important going forward for this group.”

Derwyn Lauderdale, Adrian Nelson, Kevin Reid, Melvin McAdams, Lawrence Syon, Sam Harker, Chris Hensley, Durwin Jones, Able Puentes, Laurence Myers, Jaco Reid, Eric Deveaux, Khairi Sharif, Dequante Carter and Max Birden, all played both offense and defense for the Cards.

Nelson was the team’s quarterback and had a two outstanding days throwing the football to all his receivers.

Safety Kevin Wang, linebacker Collin Speich, cornerback James Dean, linebacker Christian Dolphus and linebacker Keith Ewing played strictly defense at state.

Herrmann said they all earned blue stars.

“They all did a good job, and I think they’re all looking forward to the season,” said Herrmann. “I know its 7-on-7, but I think they’ve had a little taste of success and playing at the state tournament, which is a big deal with all the other teams and coaches and fans that are there to watch. I think this group is ready to get to (August) and get it started.”

He said overall there were a lot of positives to take out of the summer.

“I think it’s been a good summer for us,” said Herrmann. “I think all our players that played 7-on-7 did a good job. We didn’t get in the defensive system we really wanted to get in because we took the job in June after the 7-on-7 had started. If we had taken it earlier, we would have worked in our athletic period to make sure we knew what we wanted to run in our 7-on-7, but the kids still did a great job and I think they feel good about what we accomplished.”

The Cardinals will begin three-a-day workouts on Aug. 10.
