Intown chamber board member: merger still possible

By MICHAEL REED
Updated: 07.16.09
The recently closed Intown Chamber of Commerce’s lone remaining board member, Michael Massa, told the Examiner on Thursday a merger with another organization is still “definitely a possibility.”

Massa, the owner of Massa’s restaurants, confirmed all the other board members had resigned prior to the chamber closing its doors four weeks ago.

But he said a soon-to-be held meeting with another organization concerning the possibility of combining memberships made him “feel better than when it initially happened.”

He did not disclose the name the other organization, citing ongoing negotiations.

In mid-June the Examiner confirmed the Intown Chamber, established in 2002 had shut down operations at its new office in the 3000 block of Richmond Avenue, but very little official comment followed.

At the time, two board members, Vice Chairwoman Lynda Keane and Charles Dewhurst, said they had turned in their resignations and were not in a position to address the chamber’s ongoing business.

Phone messages left by the Examiner for several Intown Chamber board members, including Chairman Mike Rozell, were not immediately returned.

Massa said Rozell is still working to help resolve some of the legal issues, however.

“We are in the process of cleaning up as much as we can,” Massa said, adding a merger for the chamber’s membership was one of his primary goals.

Charlie Weiss, president and chief executive officer of the chamber, left June 5 to become executive director of the Houston Gulf Coast/South Texas Chapter of Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America.
