The Methodist Hospital looks for bone marrow donors
The Methodist Hospital is giving Houstonians the opportunity to help save the lives of people waiting for bone marrow transplants.
The third annual Bone Marrow Donor Event takes place 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in Crain Garden across from Starbucks in the main lobby of The Methodist Hospital, 6565 Fannin St.
A simple cotton mouth swab will allow a person to join the National Bone Marrow Registry, which has helped more than 25,000 cancer patients get a second chance at life since 1987.
“Because of genetic similarities, it’s important to have a wide variety of donors from all ethnic backgrounds,” said Dr. George Carrum, a hematologist at The Methodist Hospital. “To be able to address the needs in the Houston community, we need to constantly add donors to the registry. Donating is truly a gift of life for those on the waiting list.”
Anyone between the ages of 18 to 60 years old is eligible to participate if they meet the health guidelines. Minorities and those of mixed heritage are especially needed and are encouraged to donate.
If you cannot join the bone marrow registry but still want to help, you can volunteer with a recruitment or donor center in your area. For information about the Methodist event, visit www.methodisthospital.com or call 713-790-3333. For further information, visit www.bethematch.org.
