The Lanier Middle School speech and debate team has won its seventh consecutive national championship.
In all, the pupils faced 30 teams from around the country, winning School of Excellence awards in debate and individual events, in addition to finishing first overall.
“I’m privileged to work with such a talented group of people,” said second-year debate coach Franz Hill. “I feel I have the best job in the world.”
The National Junior Forensic League tournament took place June 26-28 at Saint Mary's Hall in San Antonio.
More than 40 competitors from Lanier took part in the event that saw the team close out the Lincoln-Douglas Debate with finalists Michael Portal and Ben Liu.
Seventh-grader Gregory Ross took first place in extemporaneous speaking.
“I'm very proud of the students’ hard work,” said Hill. “We’re fortunate to have a community of support from our administration, parents and alumni.
Hill took over from coach Jim Henley, whose teams won five straight titles.
“We also had some alumni who gave up their time to attend and support the team through a very tough and often grueling weekend,” said Hill, who coached the debate team at Jane Long Middle School for four years before coming to Lanier.
