McDermott, Morris Transfer

Updated: 07.01.09
Two former Cinco Ranch football players have left New Mexico State and transferred to colleges in Texas in the wake of the coaching change at NMSU.

Quarterback J.J. McDermott has transferred to SMU while defensive back Will Morris is moving to McMurry University.

McDermott, who hit 20-of-34 passes for 246 yards as an Aggie backup last season, already participated in SMU’s spring practice. He connected on 4-of-9 passes for 33 yards as the backup to former Katy QB Bo Levi Mitchell in the spring game.

As a freshman, McDermott played in eight NMSU games and hit 47-of-77 for 430 yards and two touchdowns. That includes his lone career start against Louisiana Tech when he threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns on 29-of-40 passing.

Morris is following former NMSU coach Hal Mumme to McMurry in Abilene.

Morris played safety in six games for the Aggies last season. For the year, he recorded four tackles and a fumble recovery. His best game came against Boise State (11/1) when he had two tackles.

Morris was an All-District choice at Cinco, where he also was the unbeaten 180-pound state wrestling champion as a senior.
