Students get to heart of electronics at camp
By JAKE MUONIO
Summer camp season is in full swing, and students at The Woodlands Preparatory Academy’s Camp Invention are getting to the nuts and bolts — or make that circuit boards and wires — of how things work.
The camp, which has participants from first through sixth grades, gives students hands-on science lessons.
“Right now they’re learning how things work, but by the end of the week they will build their own better mousetrap,” said Steve DiGerlando, a social studies teacher at WPA, who also teaches at the camp. “The biggest benefit to the students is they’re learning how things work. It is one thing when they turn on the TV or radio and hear sound, but it another thing to have an idea how it works.”
Amanda Smith, the camp director, said registration for many of the school’s summer camp offerings is still open — and not just for students of the school.
“They’re fun, but also educational, physical — the kids get up and move about — and creative,” Smith said.
