Stafford MSD Education Foundation awards scholarships and grants

Stafford MSD Education Foundation recently handed out scholarships to a high school senior and several teachers in the municipal school district.

Aditya Kumar a senior at Stafford High School received a $1,000 scholarship, the organization’s first student scholarship, at the 2009 Stafford High School Senior Awards Program.

The award was presented by SMSD president Linda Hennes.

Kumar, selected to receive the scholarship from a pool of six applicants, plans to use the funds to pursue a bio-engineering degree at Rice University.


Several teachers in the district also were recent receipients of various grants, including kindergarten teacher Sherri Hobbs; Stafford Middle School science teacher, Pretti Joseph and Stafford High School teachers Jilla Peasley, Audry Tyus, and Stacey Gridley.

Teacher grants are awarded based on applications and needs submitted by SMSD teachers.

The Foundation also awarded summer school scholarships to Stafford Elementary School principal Benterah Morton.

Foundation scholarships and grants are funded from community donations and fundraisers.

Foundation directors encourage businesses and community to become members and assist with efforts to provide additional scholarships and grants.

The 2nd Annual Gobble Hobble Fun Run and Walk to be held Oct. 31 also is funded through the organization.

The Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the SMSD Administration Building, located at 1625 Staffordshire Road in Stafford.
