Graduating seniors of Covenant Christian School took one major step Tuesday before their walk across the stage for Saturday’s graduation ceremony.
The school, located at 4503 Interstate 45 North in Conroe, honored its 13 graduating seniors with the annual Walk of Honor.
The event, in which students place bricks with their name and graduating class in line with previous year’s graduates, brought approximately 100 students out to support the graduates as they placed their names on the entryway to the school.
Graduating senior Michelle Walker said the ceremony, like her other experiences with the school, was a warm gathering of friends.
“I’ve been here for 12 years and this school has been one big family for me,” she said. “I’m going to miss all my friends and classmates.
“We’ve gone through so much together they’re like my brothers and sisters.”
Walker said she plans to attend the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor in the fall, majoring in sports management.
After the ceremony, classmates hugged, congratulated and reminisced with one another, affecting many of them emotionally.
Signs of tears started to show on the faces of underclassmen, but quickly dried with the reminder that graduation is not until the week/s end.
The Walk of Honor has been in place since the school relocated to a new facility eight years ago, Principal Doug Begin said, and is a way to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of graduates.
Begin said the school was founded 20 years ago, and now has 168 alumni since the first graduating class in 1991.
“We have a nice tradition and a very intimate, family-oriented atmosphere where students make lifelong friendships,” he said. “When kids come back here, it’s like they were never gone, like they’re home.”
Begin said 95 percent of the school’s graduates have gone on to pursue higher education.
