Warriors two wins from celebrating
By JAY LANGLEY
The Woodlands Christian Academy is in a familiar spot — the semifinals of the TAPPS state championship.
The Warriors (19-8) face Waco’s Vanguard College Preparatory School (17-6) in one semifinal at 10:30 a.m. Thursday on Field 2 at the Waco ISD Sports Complex in Waco.
The other semifinal pits Lubbock Christian Academy (23-10) against Tyler’s All Saints Episcopal School (22-4) on Field 1 at the same time.
The championship game is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
The Warriors are making their fifth trip to the state tournament in as many years. The Woodlands Christian Academy won the 2A title in 2006 and lost in the 3A championship game a year ago.
TWCA advanced to the state tournament with a 4-0 victory over League City’s Bay Area Christian School in the regional finals last week. Starter Sterling Frand (6-1) improved his 2009 playoff record to 2-0 by scattering six hits over seven innings while striking out seven and walking four.
Chris Miller powered the Warriors offense with a three-run home run to left-center field in the bottom of the third inning.
The Woodlands Christian earned a bye in the first round before defeating Flower Mound’s Coram Deo Academy in the second round.
Waco Vanguard owns playoff wins over Amarillo’s San Jacinto Christian Academy and Arlington’s Pantego Christian Academy.
With two wins the Warriors would match the feat of The Woodlands Christian Academy basketball team, which won the state title in February.
