After initial win, Broncos ousted from TAPPS baseball playoffs

It's been a good season for Bay Area Christian baseball. With a 10-game winning streak, a perfect game and a district championship under their belt, one would be hard-pressed to find much to complain about with the Broncos.

After Bay Area Christian secured the TAPPS 3A district championship some three weeks ago, the Broncos moved into area round against Garland Christian Academy on May 4, at BAC's baseball field. Grayson Chaney who pitched a perfect game some two weeks prior, started the game much the same as he had done against Beaumont Legacy; hitless.

As the strikes flew and batters were retired, one couldn't help but get the sense that the crowd present thought they might well see a repeat of the Chaney's first perfect performance the game before. “I was a little nervous about it, especially when we got deep in the game. I was just going to go out there and just try to throw strikes like usual,” said Chaney. The game would continue to go Chaney's way until the fourth inning. A Swordsmen batter connected for a base-hit and made it to second base, taking any hopes of a hit-less game with him. “I didn't get it (perfect game) but we hit well and my team did good and we got the win so that's all that matters,” said Chaney.

“You never know how your team is going to react after a 12-day lay-off, but I was really pleased with our performance,” said Broncos' coach Darwin Pennye. With ten strikeouts from his pitcher and a 15-0 final score, Pennye had lots to be thankful for.

“I thought it was a good game,” Pennye said. “It started with Grayson Cheney being dominant on the mound. We really didn't have a whole lot of plays to make. Out of the 15 outs, 10 of them were strike-outs.”

Coming off their victory over Garland Christian Academy, the Broncos traveled to The Woodlands to face the Warriors of The Woodlands Christian Academy for the second round of area-wide play on Friday, May 8. A lot was riding on this game as it was the last round before the Broncos could move on to the state playoffs in Waco.

But it wasn’t going to be Bay Area’s night. Despite their efforts, the Broncos couldn't get things going their way and suffered a 4-0 shutout.

“We couldn't really score anything. They did a good job of keeping us off balance,” said Pennye. “We made a couple of mental mistakes.”

Pitching didn't help the Broncos this time around. In fact, it hindered them more than helped them. And timely hitting was nowhere to be found.

“We walked a couple of guys and we made a bad pitch and a guy hit it out. A couple of walks and a blast kind of ended the game. We just couldn't get it going offensively.”

But the Broncos are already planning on next season.
