San Jacinto College offers summer activities for young people

San Jacinto College is offering a variety of summer camps, classes and activities at all three campuses combining summer fun, entertainment and education for area young people.
• San Jacinto College North hosts music camps for ages 6 through college from June 8 through July 24.
The Jazz Camp, for all ages, is scheduled June 8-12 with sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., daily. Students will learn about jazz history, theory, and improvisation, and rehearse together to prepare for a final concert June 12. Carol Morgan, San Jacinto College music teacher and author of “The Practicing Improviser,” will lead the camp with assistance from some of the Houston area’s leading jazz musicians.
The Band Camp, for seventh- through 11th-graders, meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 15 through 19. Dr. Randy Snyder, North campus music department chairman, leads the program, which will emphasize improving players’ practice methods, techniques, and performance styles. Master classes, clinics, and rehearsals will prepare for a concert to be presented June 19.
The Piano Camp, for ages 6 through 12, meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., June 22 through 26. The camp is designed for students at all levels, even those with little or no keyboard experience; anc concludes June 26 with recitals.
The Guitar Camp, for ages 13 and older, also meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., July 13 through 17. Students will be introduced to note reading, classic guitar technique, ensemble participation, basic jazz comping, and open chord changes. The teacher is San Jacinto College professor Rosendo Reyna. A recital is planned for July 17.
The Brass Camp, for ninth-graders and older, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., July 20 through 24, with instruction provided by Snyder. Activities include master classes, clinics, guest artist performances, rehearsals, and a final concert July 18.

• The North campus’ Ogden Child Care Center hosts a School Age Summer Camp, June 8 through mid-August for children ages 5 through 11.

• San Jacinto College Central’s pre-college class for beginning piano students will coincide with the college’s eight-week summer session June 8 through July 24, in the Monte Blue Music Building, Room 108, on the Central campus, 8060 Spencer Highway in Pasadena. Instructors from the music department will staff the classes. Each class will be limited to 12 students. • The Energy Venture Camp, sponsored by the College’s Continuing and Professional Development Division, will be held at the North, South, and Central campuses for five one-week sessions — June 15 and 22; July 6, 13, and 20. Daily sessions will meet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday. Male and female students entering the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades will learn about the energy industry. Campers will find out about cutting edge technology, work in teams and take part in hands-on interactive games and exercises, and learn about career opportunities in the energy field. • KidSpot Summer Drama Camp, for ages 5 and older, will be held at the Central Campus Powell Arena Theatre, with two sessions, June 15 through 19 and June 22 through 26, meeting daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students should bring a lunch and snacks. Campers will develop acting skills while participating in workshops, which may include movement, voice, theater games, improvisations, stage acting, film acting, character development and production. Theater faculty members and San Jacinto College students will conduct workshops. The camps culminate in a performance of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” June 19 and June 26. • The Central campus will host a Robot Extravaganza for eighth-graders and up in three sessions. The beginner camp is scheduled July 20 through 24; the intermediate camp, July 27 through 31; and the advanced camp Aug. 3-7. Sessions for each camp meet from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to noon Friday. Lunch and snacks are included. Students will learn about robots and their applications in modern technology, and take field trips. They will also build and program LEGO NXT robots, and learn about science, technology, engineering, and math careers. • Scott Gernander, San Jacinto College head basketball coach, conducts Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 7 to 18 at the Central campus’ Anders Gym. The first session is planned for July 20 through 24, and the second session July 27 through 31, meeting from 2 to 5 p.m., daily. The camp helps young people to improve offensive and defensive basketball skills. • For youngsters interested in soccer, the men’s soccer program hosts a soccer academy July 27 to 30 for ages 13 to 18; and Aug. 3 to 6 for ages 6 to 12. Both sessions meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the soccer fields located on the San Jacinto College South campus at 13735 Beamer Road. Cost is $100 and includes a free T-shirt.
