After 16 years, two accreditations and a new campus, Covenant Christian School Headmaster Charles Loyd is ready for the next chapter in his life.

Loyd will leave the school to become principal of John H. Wood Junior Public Charter District’s Afton Oaks Campus, located in San Antonio.

“It’s a heavy heart for him to leave because he’s a friend and mentor,” head librarian Pat Cullum said. “He’s been an ideal person to work for. I personally feel he needs to be given recognition for serving here for 16 years.”

During his tenure at Covenant Christian, Loyd saw enrollment grow from 132 to 256, staff increase from 27 to 45 and the size of the school expand from 20,000 square feet on less than four acres to 50,000 square feet on 35 acres, Loyd said.

“When I was hired, the school board asked me to accomplish three major goals,” Loyd said.

The first was accreditation, which the school received from the Association of Christian Schools International in 1996 and again in 2003. The second goal was to develop a long-range plan, which led to “Destination 45” and the move to the current campus, and the third was to get the school out of debt, which was accomplished by the end of his first year, Loyd said.

“There was always something to do and strive for,” Loyd said. “This campus is still not completed. There’s a lot to be done.”

That includes construction of a second building so elementary and secondary classes can have separate buildings. Overseeing that project will fall on John Weaver, who was hired to take over from Loyd as headmaster. Weaver started Calvary Chapel Christian School in Las Vegas, and has served as its superintendent for 13 years.

“We’re losing one strong, godly, Christian man, but we feel strongly the Lord has given us a great new head administrator,” Cullum said.

Loyd and his wife, Ann, have two children who both graduated from Covenant Christian. His daughter Jeni is now a freshman at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and his son Christopher is a junior at Texas A&M University.

Loyd began his career in public schools, where he was a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Conroe Independent School District for 15 years.

“After all that time my next career goal was central administration,” Loyd said. “I had applied around the state and CISD and wasn’t landing anything.”

That’s when an elder at his church, Conroe Bible Church, mentioned that Covenant Christian was looking for a headmaster. In the meantime, Loyd was offered a job near family in San Antonio.

“I just felt like God was leading me to Covenant Christian and now I’ve been here for 16 years,” Loyd said. “I never thought I’d be here for this long. I’m just ready for something different, something new and different. … It’s going to be hard to leave after that many years.

“We’ve committed it to prayer and I feel God told us this is right.”

Covenant Christian School will host a Farewell Reception honoring Loyd from 4-6 p.m. May 19 at Conroe Bible Church, located at 4491 I 45 North in Conroe. To learn more about Covenant Christian or the reception, call (936) 890-8080 or visit covenantonline.com.
