Cy Springs sprinter hoping to reach state
By Michael Sudhalter
Kimberlyn Duncan has competed in different track and field events through her four years of high school.
But the Cy Springs High senior sprinter has one individual event she’s focusing on this spring – along with the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.
“I’m pretty much trying to perfect the 200,” Duncan said. “I’m working really hard in practice . I’m going to practice harder than I’ve ever had to get my time down.”
Duncan set a personal record in the 200-meter with a time of 23.96 last month in the Cy-Fair ISD Invitational at Cy Ridge High, topping the 24.30 effort she had at the AAU Junior Nationals last summer in Knoxville, Tenn.
“She’s improved a lot,” Lady Panthers track and field coach Ashley Accardo said. “Even from last year. She’s just looking really strong right now. Her times are going down and her form is looking good.”
Duncan, 17, hopes to get her time down to 23 seconds, or even, 22 with hopes of reaching the UIL State Championships next month in Austin; she made the event on the 4x100 and 4x200 relays as a sophomore.
“It was really fun, and it was a wake-up call because I didn’t think we were going to make it,” Duncan said. “I know (running the 200 at state) would be fun and a great experience being up there.”
Said Accardo, “Overall, she’s gotten a lot stronger. She has a really good chance this year – she’s motivated and determined to get there.”
Duncan signed with LSU last November, choosing the Tigers over Columbia, Cornell and Texas Christian.
She began running track in fourth grade and became serious about the sport as a seventh grader at Thornton Middle School. She’d always wanted to go to LSU and is excited about the opportunity to run track and major in History.
“When I was little, I said I wanted to go to LSU,” Duncan said. “I didn’t want to be that far away from home.”
“(After college),I would like to go around the world and be a historian and learn about people, because it’s interesting.”
Duncan’s first step to advancing to state is competing at the Class 5A-District 15 meet, April 14-16, at Cy Falls.
“Kimberlyn is just one of those people that’s really fun to be around,” Accardo said. “She’s definitely one I’m really going to miss.”
