| The Lady Saints went 20-0 this past season and won the Greater Houston Catholic Athletic Association championship. |
The John Paul II Catholic School varsity girls’ basketball team -- the Lady Saints -- recently defeated St. Laurence Catholic School on to become the 2009 Greater Houston Catholic Athletic Association (GHCAA) City Champions. In the first playoff game, John Paul II beat Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School to advance to the semi-finals, where they defeated St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. They subsequently won the finals game against St. Laurence with a nail-biting score of 27 to 25. This championship wrapped up a season in which the Lady Saints were undefeated, with a record of 20 – 0. This outstanding record included a first place win at two tournaments during the season, one at Houston Christian High School and the other at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School.
The Lady Saints were led by Coach Donita Lindley, who has been the John Paul II girls’ basketball coach for the past four years.
“Coach Lindley coaches for the love of the game and a love for the school,” said Mary Beth Hewitt, the Middle School Athletic Director at John Paul II. “She did a remarkable job leading the girls to this championship. And every girl on the team was amazing. Each one gave 150 percent.” Hewitt also commented on the show of support from the faculty and staff at John Paul II. “The girls were inspired by the number of administrators and teachers that came to every game,” she said. “They could really feel the community spirit.”
John Paul II Catholic School, a 2008 National Blue Ribbon Exemplary school, is located in West Houston and serves over 700 students from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade. Information about John Paul II is available on the school website at www.jp2.org.
