Cost-conscious mom dishes free eats info

Families like to eat out – no cooking and no washing dishes afterward is always a plus.

But sometimes it’s difficult to find family-friendly restaurants that offer reasonably-priced meals.

Some restaurants like to assist with a food budget by offering “Kids Eat Free” nights, but it can be difficult to keep up with restaurants that offer this special, let alone on which night it’s offered.

Pearlandkidseatfree.com is a web site listing restaurants in the Pearland community that offer the “Kids Eat Free” nights, and is maintained by area residents.

Denita Bethely and her husband Adrian have been operating the website for more than six months. Denita was introduced to the site by a friend operating one in Spring, Texas.

Despite the demands of a full-time job, Denita wanted to help out fellow Pearlanders with young families to feed.

“I thought it would be a good thing to get into, and it saves families money,” she says. “I have two kids, so we’ve utilized it as well.”

The site sees a little over 300 hits monthly with 100 restaurants listed. You can see search by either day of the week or cuisine.

“More restaurants are offering this service. A couple of them told me they’d be starting it in a few months with the economic downturn.”

While USA Kids Eat Free is a national franchise, its localization is what has given the organization such a grassroots feel with frequent updates and local contacts in the communities where people live.

“We often get feedback from people visiting the website, and they’ll make suggestions,” Denita says.

Since its launch in April 2008, USAKEF is growing outside of Texas. Currently, USAKEF has territories in four other states including Colorado, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama.
