Pasadena residents to benefit from free tax preparation
The United Way of Greater Houston has announced a $500,000 investment to make free tax preparation services available to hard-working, lower-income Houston-area families.
The location of the nearest free neighborhood tax center in the Pasadena area is at Mi Tienda, 1630 Spencer Highway.
“The lack of financial stability is at the core of many of the issues facing families who struggle financially in our area,” said Anna M. Babin, president and CEO, United Way of Greater Houston. “The United Way of Greater Houston is committed to providing families with the tools — such as free tax preparation — and education necessary to have a lasting impact on their financial situation.”
Available to families with a household income less than $45,000, the free neighborhood tax centers are expected to process more than 15,000 returns this year and will put more than $20 million back into the pockets of local, low-to-moderate income families.
With approximately 500,000 households in the Houston area earning less than $45,000 per year, the free tax services are intended to increase economic independence and allow families to pay for basic needs (food, clothing, etc.), their children’s school expenses, or save for the future. Once the tax returns have been filed, taxpayers can expect to receive refunds within eight to 14 days.
“In these difficult economic times, it is especially important to provide this type of assistance to families,” said Babin. “The free neighborhood tax centers will help every family get the tax credits they are entitled to receive and avoid the dangers of deceptive, quick loan offers that carry hidden costs.”
The free neighborhood tax centers will be run by Neighborhood Centers, Inc., and will offer services in English, Spanish and other languages, and will open beginning January 15. Residents seeking more information on the free neighborhood tax center locations, hours of operation and languages available should contact the 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE by dialing 211.
Neighborhood Centers is also seeking volunteers to assist individuals and families in filing their taxes and claiming refunds owed to them. Tax preparation volunteers will receive eight hours of training and IRS certification, and are asked to commit to volunteering a total of 36 hours between Jan. 15 and April 15. No experience is necessary. To sign up or learn more about volunteering, e-mail taxes@neighborhood-centers.org, visit www.neighborhood-centers.org or call 713-669-5381.
