The Deer Park Independent School District outdid themselves once again with the opening of the spectacular brand new dining facility at Deer Park High School-South Campus.

Students at the DPHS-South Campus returned back to school on Monday from the holiday break to find their old cafeteria completely boarded off and a brand new café style cafeteria awaiting them.

The days of the low ceilings, long uncomfortable tables and cramming nearly 800 students through three lunches in a cafeteria built for 600 are over.

Demolition has already begun on the old cafeteria to make room for the school’s career technology classrooms to be ready in the fall.

It’s out with the old and in with the new for DPHS, and absolutely cutting edge new at that, as the new dinning hall is equipped with a large screen, a projector that drops down from the ceiling, a number of flat-screen TV’s, a video system, a sound system, three separate accesses to the food court, 1,000 person capacity seating with booths, modern tables, a school store and a giant window in which one can see Abshier Stadium and the parking lot. Not to mention the school is working on a deal to provide the option of a Chick-Fil-A lunch on Fridays.

The new cafeteria definitely does not seem like your everyday run-of-the-mill high school cafeteria anymore in fact the cafeteria most resembles a college-type dining hall. The uses for the new dining hall are numerous as it will be the home for all the annual banquets including the academic, sports and club banquets. The large screen, drop-down projector and amazing sound system should provide a little more boom than the old podium and speaker set-up of the past banquets.

Principal Rhonda Kouba was pleased about the overall final product of the dinning hall and very excited about what it would provide for her students, “Our students were wonderful the whole time,” said Principle Rhonda Kouba “they were great, even though they were cramped into that cafeteria, we are very proud of the way they handled themselves all these years so when we designed the cafeteria we wanted to design it for the students and we are so please with the results,” said a smiling Principles Kouba, “I’ve even heard some students say they don’t feel like there in school. We wanted this to be a place where the students felt very comfortable; we wanted it to look different then the rest of the building and I believe we’ve done just that!”

The privileges and perks for the students in the dinning hall are plenty as the students have the opportunity to listen to music, view the school announcements on the TV’s as well as participate in movie nights hosted by school organizations. The Shell Federal Credit Union will be available in the food court for student and faculty needs as well. The new dinning facility of Deer Park High School is a pristine addition to building and the students will have the opportunity to take full advantage of all the capabilities it has to offer.
