Brazos Bend State Park to host a Rainbow Trout family fishing event

From staff reports
Updated: 01.08.09
Brazos Bend State Park will host a day of outdoor fishing fun for families on Jan. 31 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at New Horseshoe Lake in Needville.

Over 2,000 rainbow trout will be stocked in the lake as part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s annual trout stocking program.

The parks and wildlife organization has been stocking rainbow trout each winter throughout Texas since the 1970s, providing Texans a simple and economical opportunity to go fishing.

Anglers are required to pay the park’s entrance fee for the Rainbow Trout Fishing Event and follow all applicable fishing regulations.

Park visitors do not need a fishing license while fishing within the boundaries of a state park.

Rainbow trout anglers can keep five trout per day, with no minimum limit on length of fish caught.

According to event coordinators, catching fish at the event should be easy because fish bite almost immediately after stocking, making the experience ideal for both kids and novice angler.

Typically fish will take a variety of baits from whole kernel canned corn or commercial soft bait to artificial flies and even small spinner baits.

Fishing gear can be as basic as an inexpensive rod and reel combo, a small plastic bobber, a fishing weight and a hook.

A limited number of rod and reels will be available free of charge for use during the event.

Coordinators of the event advise participants to carry along a pair of needle-nosed pliers to help remove hooks, and a five-gallon bucket, small ice chest or fish stringer to store fish.

Park rangers will be available during the event to assist fisherman and answer questions.
