New food bank being established

New Bethel Baptist Church has established a food bank through the cooperation of Langetree Duck Farms and the Houston Food Bank.

On Tuesday, 7,600 lbs. of food were delivered to the church as volunteers with the Cleveland ISD Air Force Junior ROTC and the church worked to unload the truck and sort through the dozens of cardboard boxes of food.

Pastor Travis Hewlitt credited Cleveland EDC member Willie Carter for helping the church obtain the food.

Of the new food bank, Hewlitt said, “We are glad to be able to do it. We are thankful for all the help with establishing of the food bank. It will help supplement our town’s other food bank at this difficult financial time in our country.”

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday, all of the food had been distributed to local families, said Willie Carter.

According to Carter, 260 families had received assistance. Food was also donated to the Cleveland Senior Citizens Organization and MHMR.

“People responded to the Advocate’s online article, from advertising it on the television station and from word-of-mouth,” said Carter. “It was across all lines. People just showed up. It was a sight to see people come out, even with the inclement weather. They showed up.”

Over 25 volunteers helped with the food distribution. Brookshire Brothers and H-E-B donated grocery bags.

Carter said that another food shipment is expected in February.
