PVAMU band, dance team lead Rose Parade

New Year’s Day was rosy for the Prairie View A&M University Marching Storm Band and the Black Foxes dance troupe.

 

The band and dance team led off the 120th Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., courtesy of Honda, which sponsored their appearance.

 

According to Sheleah D. Hughes, director of public relations for PVAMU, approximately 200 students participated in the parade, including five drum majors and 17 Black Foxes.

 

“This was one of their biggest honors,” Hughes said.

 

She said the band was selected for sponsorship by Honda based on its performance in Honda’s annual Battle of the Bands competition. She said Honda paid most of the band’s expenses – approximately $400,000 – with the rest covered by local fundraising.

 

“They did well,” Hughes said. “the commentators were very surprised at how well they did.”

 

This was the band’s second trip this year to Southern California.

 

The band was invited to perform in October at the Angel City Classic football game.
