2009 will be the year of the Tomball Volunteer Fire Department, according to a proclamation due to be presented at the city council meeting Jan. 5.

The Tomball Volunteer Fire Department was first organized in 1934 and the first fire truck was purchased in 1936, according to the proclamation.

The fire department has grown to 7 full-time employees, 34 part-time employees, several volunteers and 20 vehicles, the proclamation states, which provide constant service to the greater Tomball area.

The City of Tomball has earned an Insurance Services Office rating of 1, the highest rating any fire department can get, which results in low insurance rates for residents.

Fire department personnel also teach first aid classes, work through disasters such as hurricanes, prepare fireworks displays and care for families during holidays.

According to the mayor’s proclamation, the citizens of Tomball “benefit daily from the knowledge and skills of the highly-trained individuals and their heroic efforts to serve our community.”
