Business executive announces his bid for city council

Updated: 01.07.09
Donald “Don” Johnson, 46, a native Pasadenan, married with two sons has announced his candidacy for Pasadena City Council Position District H.

This is Johnson’s second attempt at public office. In 2001, he sought the position of Pasadena City Council District F running his campaign versus a three-term incumbent, Phil Cayten. Shortly after that defeat, Johnson’s neighborhood was re-districted into H represented by J.J. Isbell.

Isbell is currently serving his fourth consecutive term and cannot run for the seat again.

As senior vice president and chief financial officer, stakeholder and a director of a portfolio consisting of six maritime companies, which include, Shippers Stevedoring Company and Bayport Global Logistics (a Pasadena business providing import and export cargo warehouse and distribution services), Johnson believes his vast experience and wealth of knowledge gained by profit and loss responsibilities would bring a strong business approach and an additional asset to the residents of Pasadena.

Johnson said he would bring a positive passionate voice, leadership, integrity and a professional “can-do” work ethic to the District H position.

Johnson stated listening to his constituents and incorporating their input into an agenda that includes:

Public safety, security, and welfare of our citizens assuring our city’s paid and volunteer finest the continued vehicles, training, equipment and compensation necessary to assure a superior quality of life for all citizens.

Financial responsibility – creation of checks and balances, dollar for dollar accountability, outside audits, commission studies on improved business practices.

Continued Industrial development and attraction of new and additional commercial businesses to our city. There is a tremendous opportunity of Industrial expansion giving the opening of Port of Houston Authority Bayport Container and Cruise Terminal located in Pasadena’s own backyard.

Continuation of infrastructure improvements and city beautification. Our city’s image goes a long way in attracting a sustained community growth and enhanced business opportunities which yield an increased amount of tax revenue.

Insuring our city’s Corporate Partners are responsible, sensitive, environmentally compliant and financially supportive.

“The early part of my life was spent on the north side of town near Strawberry Park,” Johnson said, “and I have been fortunate for the past 17 years to reside in the sprawling and thriving south side. I believe I am well qualified and certainly eager to represent the largest constituents of registered city voters in this wonderful District H.”

Johnson stated he was previously involved in the Boys Scouts of America Organization for 15 years; has coached and assisted in numerous youth sports teams; is former president of the Deer Park Tennis Association; and is current Chairman and Vice Chairman of several Maritime Committees.

Johnson is a member of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, West Gulf Maritime Association, National Association of Waterfront Employers, General Stevedoring Council, and Greater Houston Port Bureau.

" If we have another event like Ike I hope Mr Johnson would be easier to reach and return calls unlike the last councilman we had. "
