Kingwood flip-flop designer to attend inaugural ball
By JENNIFER SUMMER
Embellished with ribbon, beads, feathers and rhinestones, Kingwood resident Di Manning’s flip-flops will turn heads at the Texas Inaugural Black Tie and Boots Ball Jan. 19.
Owner and designer of Funké Flopz, Manning has been creating custom-made flip-flops for customers since the summer of 2001 and has been busy designing ever since.
“I first developed the idea for Funké Flopz after I bought a pair of decorated flip-flops while on vacation in California and they were so hard and blistered my feet,” Manning said. “I found comfortable flip-flops, Havaianas, and started to embellish them with different trims and accents for myself and my daughter’s friends and they caught on.”
Manning first started by using a hot glue gun to decorate the flip-flops but decided to start sewing the embellishments on the flip-flops so they would be permanent.
With her success through the years, Manning transformed her daughter’s dance studio upstairs in their home into a studio featuring her flip-flops and every design possible.
“I keep an ongoing stock of flip-flops for my customers as most of my sales are year-round,” Manning said. “They are all available for sale and I’m always giving back to schools and other nonprofits to include in auctions and help them raise money.”
Recently, Manning received an invitation to attend the Texas State Society of Washington, D.C.’s Black Tie and Boots Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. and is the only designer from Houston to be invited to this specific ball.
Manning will be attending the ball and with the help of her son, Grant, will be showcasing her flip-flops and her designs.
“We were so excited to be invited, especially since we were the only Houston designers to be invited to the Texas Inaugural Ball. I am planning to feature my flip-flops to have turquoise, feathers and rhinestones, which showcases the true Texas style,” Manning said.
Funké Flopz has a variety of different colored and different accessorized flip-flops available for customers and will even design them according to the customer’s wish.
Manning is planning on even bringing a pair of men’s flip-flops, though unembellished, in case President-elect Barack Obama stops by and requests a pair.
“We are excited about who we might see and really hope to see President George Bush and Laura,” Manning said.
“I am very excited. My business is very fulfilling because I know I can create a design for a customer that makes them happy and the flip-flops help them to be comfortable and fashionable.”
