Coach in surgery after motorcycle accident

Updated: 01.13.09
Humble High School head baseball coach David Sitton is undergoing surgery today and his vital signs are strong, according to Humble Independent School District officials who have been in touch with family members.

Sitton was riding his motorcycle in the 6900 block of FM 1960 on the evening of Jan. 12 when an oncoming motorist unexpectedly turned left in front of him and caused a collision.

According to Harris County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Deputy Karen Miller, the driver who crashed her blue Ford Expedition into Sitton's motorcycle is a 28-year-old Atascocita woman. A citation for failure to yield right-of-way was or will be issued to the woman, Miller said.

"Alcohol was not an issue in the accident, and from what witnesses said, the motorcyclist was traveling at an appropriate speed," Miller added. "The woman was in the left turn lane and, according to what she told deputies at the scene, had come to a stop, waiting for an oncoming vehicle to pass. She didn't see the motorcycle, she said, until a split-second before the collision."

Sitton, who authorities said was not wearing a helmet but did have his headlights on, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital downtown in critical condition.

“Accidents like this are a reminder of how precious our lives and families are,” said Humble ISD spokeswoman Karen Collier. “With that in mind, please keep Coach Sitton and his family in your thoughts and prayers. In a close-knit community like ours, tragedies like this bring us even closer with a shared desire to support the family however possible.”

Sitton has been the head baseball coach at Humble High School for 25 years. He also serves as the current president of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association and batting practice pitcher for the Houston Astros for the last ten years.

Sitton is a graduate of Humble High School.
