Missouri City council approves submission of crime victim liaison grant
By DIANE TEZENO
City of Missouri City council members unanimously approved submission of a grant application to fund a position for a crime victim liaison.
Council’s vote allows the city to seek grant monies through the Houston-Galveston Area Council necessary to help fund a crime victim liaison position for budget year 2010.
The resolution approving the submission of the grant application, to be submitted to the Criminal Justice Division of the Office of the Governor, was approved in the Jan. 5 regular council meeting.
The person hired to fill this role serves as a liaison between victims and law enforcement and social service agencies, including providing on-scene crisis intervention, crisis counseling and notification of victim rights.
Funding for the city’s current crime victim liaison employee ends on Aug. 31.
“If the State awards us the grant, we will receive $46,828 toward the crime victim liaison salary,” City Manager Frank Simpson said in a statement contained in background information related to the resolution.
The grant will fund approximately 75 percent of the salary for the crime liaison position.
The Missouri City Police Department's Crime Victim Assistance Program is designed to respond to to the needs of victims of crime and to reduce the effects of short and long term trauma experienced by victims.
