Home of captured felon goes up in flames in suspicious fire
By OBSERVER STAFF REPORTS
Firefighters from the New Caney, Splendora and Porter Fire Departments responded to a fire at a home on Peach Creek Drive in New Caney at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 11.
The home was reported to be vacant and has been the subject of previous criminal activity prior to the fire. The home’s last known occupant, Robert Lawrence Lopez, 29, of New Caney, had not been staying at the home in recent weeks and had been the subject of a manhunt by area law enforcement.
Just prior to the fire, Lopez was arrested on two outstanding felony warrants related to possession of narcotics. He was arrested at an area business by officers from Precinct 4 Constable Rowdy Hayden’s office.
“[Lopez] was located at a gas station in New Caney,” said Precinct 4 Constable’s Chief Deputy Barry Welch. “Robert Lawerence Lopez was taken into custody without incident by Deputy Seals. [He] had several surety to surrender felony warrants for his arrest.”
As the Constable’s deputies were transporting Lopez to the Montgomery County Jail, neighbors on Peach Creek Drive reported that the home was on fire. The home was fully engulfed in fire when firefighters arrived and was declared a total loss.
The investigation into this suspicious fire is ongoing at this time by the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office.
Lopez, who shows prior convictions for assault causing bodily injury and felony possession of marijuana, is being held on two bonds of $20,000 each. He has been a fugitive in East Montgomery County since November 2008.
Lopez’s common law wife Meshua Roth also has four outstanding misdemeanor warrants for her arrest. Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to contact the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office at 281-577-8985.
