The city of Deer Park recently held ceremonies at the Deer Park Police Department to swear in newly appointed Chief of Police Gregory Grigg.
City Manager Ronald Crabtree led the ceremonies as numerous Deer Park officials including Mayor Wayne Riddle, councilmen Charles Garrison, Chris Richey, and Bill Patterson along with councilwoman Beckie Stockstill-Cobb; were on hand to show their support for the newly appointed chief. Also showing their support for Chief Grigg were numerous law enforcement jurisdictions from the area including the La Porte Police Department, the Pasadena Police Department, the Baytown Police Department, and the Texas City Police Department among others.
“We have an outstanding working relationship with the police departments and other law enforcement agencies in our area,” said Crabtree. “We are very proud of that and we appreciate all the agencies being here as it is a tribute; having all you here today; to this department, the working relationship that we’ve maintained over the years and certainly to Chief Grigg.”
Assistant Chief Ken Findley was also recognized at the ceremonies for an outstanding job as Acting Chief of Police for the eight month duration which Crabtree described as “extraordinarily well and very capable leadership” as he expressed his appreciation for the dedicated service of Findley during that time.
“The selection of personnel to lead various parts of a city is perhaps the most important responsibility of a city manager,” said Crabtree. “These are the people that truly are the leaders of our organization. They manage the day to day operations of the city and help shape the policies that set the direction of the city by providing information and professional advice to the mayor and the city council in their process of developing polices and setting goals for the city. Once these policies are set and the goals have been established they have the responsibility for implementing the policies and achieving these goals.”
Last summer Crabtree and Deer Park city officials along with assistance from the Waters Consulting Firm -a firm with a strong reputation for recruiting top level talent for numerous key positions for many cities and agencies around the United States- began the processes of recruiting qualified candidates for the position of Deer Park Chief of Police.
According to Crabtree, by mid-September, nearly 60 well-qualified candidates had submitted their credentials for the position. After stringent evaluation of all 60 candidates, only six managed to make the cut into the interview process in which all six were required to submit written responses highlighting three major achievements in their career which were carefully reviewed by the city’s staff and the search firm.
After close evaluation, the candidates were invited to an interview process that included numerous sit down sessions with an interview panel comprised of DPPD and city of Deer Park officials. Only two candidates were invited back after the interview process.
“At the end of this process and following a thorough background check, I made the decision to offer the position of Chief of Police to Greg Grigg,” said Crabtree.
After having his recommendation approved and confirmed by Mayor Wayne Riddle and city council (unanimously), Crabtree began the process of bringing Grigg aboard as the new Chief of Police.
Grigg began his career in law enforcement in October of 1994 with the Tyler Police Department; he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a master’s degree in Public Administration from University of Texas at Tyler while serving in the areas of patrol, special operations, and as a Field Training Officer. He was promoted to sergeant in July of 1990 where he supervised patrol officers, served as Special Operations Training Officer and was a Field Training Officer Sergeant; which earned him Supervisor of the Year honors and Tyler Rotary Club Officer of the Year Honors. Sgt. Grigg was then appointed to the rank of Lieutenant in July of 1994 where he was given full responsibilities over 44 officers, served as acting Captain (when needed), and managed the district support team that included K-9, bicycle, and traffic units.
Grigg’s career continued to grow within the department as he climbed up the ranks from a young patrolman to a highly decorated law enforcement official and finishing out a very productive tenure at the Tyler Police Department as Deputy Chief of Police in 2008.
Despite Chief Grigg’s highly decorated law enforcement accomplishments on the professional side, Crabtree was extremely impressed with his commitment to community involvement.
“As impressed as I was by Greg’s accomplishments in his professional career, and how he had handled the entire hiring process,” said Crabtree, “I was equally impressed by his involvement in a variety of community organizations and activities in Tyler, to me this reflected his personal commitment to the community he had served for so many years.”
When seeing the kind of dedication to civic duties such as Grigg’s which included: Board Member of the Boys and Girls Home of East Texas, Board of Directors on Teen Court, Board Chair of the United Way, Board Chair of the United Way’s Agency Relations Committee, involvement in Leadership Tyler’s Alumni Committee, the Children’s Advocacy Center and finally he had been nominated as the incoming Chair of the Rotary Club in Tyler; one can clearly determine that his commitment to the youth of the community and the community itself was a perfect fit for Deer Park.
Newly appointed Chief Grigg had positive things to say about serving the community of Deer Park.
“It is my privileged and honor to work for such a wonderful community as Deer Park,” said Grigg. “I look forward to the challenges that lay ahead and I am eager to get to work for this community.”
Members of Grigg’s family were on hand as well to share the proud moment for the newly appointed Chief, they were: wife Jennifer, sons Logan and Allen along with wife Jennifer’s parents Robert Adams and Joy Adams and niece Bethany.
