Barbers Hill Lions Club receives their Charter

By MIKE GEORGE
Updated: 01.12.09
With the presentation of the Club Charter and Banner, which was supplied by the sponsoring club of Dayton Noon Lions, by District Governor Barron Cagle to the club’s president, Stan Frazier, it became official – The Barbers Hill Lions Club is born.

“You have an opportunity to change the vision of this community,” said Past International Director M.P. “Mike” Butler fulfilling his role as guest speaker for the occasion. “By being a member of Lions Club International, you’re part of an organization that is changing the world. Has there ever been a better time for people to come together to make a difference? The unique thing about Lions Clubs is that you are an autonomous club – you do what you want to do.”

And so it was that on Saturday evening, the Barbers Hill Lions Club received its charter after all charter members present that night were given their membership certificates and Lions pins. Not just any pin, but Charter Member Pins.

“These pins are special; not every Lions gets one,” said Lion Cagle. “I don’t have one, but maybe that’s because the club I joined was 50 years old when I joined it. No, this is a special pin and only charter members get to wear one.”

The event included a social hour and silent auction which began at six, followed by a dinner and the program at 7 p.m. A special treat was the singing of the National Anthem by the Barbers Hill High School Choir.

In addition Lion Cagle who is the current 2008-2007 district director, the 2007-2008 District Governor Art Drouin and ’06-’07 District Governor Margaret Badeaux, as well as several other former district governors were also in attendance.

Butler, the former past international director is from Kerrville and owns a construction company. His company was responsible for the construction and continued maintenance and necessary construction of the Lion’s Camp in that fair city. The Lion’s Camp holds camp sessions beginning at the end of May through summer for children with seeing deficiencies, diabetes, and other debilitating conditions. Lions Clubs from all over the country work to send children to the camp at no charge. Now, the Barbers Hill Lions will be looking for youngsters they can send to camp from their service community of Mont Belvieu.

Officers for this initial year of operation are as follows: President Stan Frazier, 1st Vice President Gayle Woodall who also serves as Tail Twister, Secretary Cindy Price, Assistant Secretary Missy Malechek, Treasurer Diane Gregory, Assistant Treasurer Donneshea Cook, Membership Chairman Virgil Blasdlel and the Lion Tamer is Greg Poole. Board members are: one-year director Jeanette McClellan and two-year directors Patsy Battle and Sandra Duree.
