Staying healthy in the New Year starts with prevention
From Staff Reports
Each year Americans make their list of resolutions for the New Year. And each year many forget what they want to achieve within a short time, even though many of the most popular health-related resolutions, such as losing weight, eating healthier or starting an exercise program, may help prevent health problems and diseases in the future.
To move the process of taking a health-related resolution from thought to action, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital is offering a variety of free screenings to help get the New Year off to a healthy start.
To register for a class or for more information call 1-800-681-2733 or visit www.CyFairHospital.com/Events.
Class space is limited and reservations are required. All screenings and seminars are held in the Professional Building I located at 11302 Fallbrook Drive on the campus of Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital.
· Free Preventative Cardiac Screening
Heart disease builds slowly and quietly. Some people don’t know they have a problem until they have a heart attack.
So how do you know if you are at risk? This screening provides baseline heart screening services and information necessary to possibly prevent heart disease and related problems.
The screening includes total blood cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), weight, risk factor analysis and health information. The next screening is scheduled for Saturday, February 28 from 8 to 11 a.m.
· Free Bone Density Screening for Women Ages 40 to 65
Women between the ages of 40 and 65 are at greatest risk for developing osteoporosis as a result of decreased estrogen levels.
This screening includes a bone density screening of the ankle, risk factor analysis and health information. Participants should not wear socks or hose or they should wear those that are easily removed because the screening requires a bare foot.
The next screening is scheduled for Saturday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to noon.
· Free Weight Loss Surgery Seminar
Anyone who has tried to lose weight knows it can feel like a losing battle. Bariatric surgery may be an option for people who have a body mass index of 40 or greater, or a body mass index of 35 or greater with serious co-morbidities such as diabetes or heart disease.
Participants will hear discussions about the risks and possible complications associated with the surgery as well as what to expect from life after the procedure.
Seminars are typically held the second Tuesday and fourth Wednesday of every month.
Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital offers additional classes, seminars and screenings throughout the year. The hospital also sponsors support groups for cancer, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and weight loss patients.
