Firefighters respond to multiple house fires in East County

Firefighters battled three house fires in East Montgomery County Sunday night and Monday, including one incident that involved a woman who allegedly left two young children at home alone and another structure that burned under “suspicious” circumstances, according to the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Firefighters blamed space heaters for two house fires Monday. The first occurred at 6:30 a.m. when a space heater too close to a bed started a fire at a home on Tower Woods Drive that injured one occupant.

County Fire Marshal’s officers were assisted by the Auto Theft Task Force and Child Protective Services. CPS investigators took custody of two children, ages 5 and 7, when it was determined their mother allegedly left them without proper supervision.

No other information was available about the fire or the woman who allegedly left the children at home.

Another space heater fire was reported shortly before noon on FM 1485 east of New Caney. Units from New Caney, Porter and Splendora quickly contained the blaze, but not before smoke and fire damaged the home.

With temperatures expected to be in the 30s in the coming days, Williams urged Montgomery County residents to practice caution when using space heaters in their homes.

Space heaters should be inspected to make sure they are working properly and designed for indoor use. Heating units should be placed away from curtains, bedding or flammable materials and positioned where they are not accessible by children or could be knocked over by pets.

On Sunday evening, firefighters from the New Caney, Splendora and Porter fire departments responded to a house fire on Peach Creek Drive in New Caney. Precinct 4 Constable’s deputies arrested Robert Lopez, the last known occupant of the vacant home, at an area business shortly before the blaze was discovered.

The home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived at the scene. Montgomery County Fire Marshal Jimmy Williams stated in a press release Monday that an investigation into the “suspicious” fire is ongoing.

The Conroe Fire Department sectioned off parts of Main Street in downtown Conroe Monday afternoon when construction crews punctured a 2-inch gas line, Assistant Chief Paul Sims said.

The leak occurred around 2:47 p.m. at 225 N. Main St. in an outside line next to a building, he said. Multiple CFD units responded to the location, and Centerpoint gas workers were on location to fix the leak.

After checking gas levels in surrounding buildings and determining there were no hazards, the scene was cleared around 3:12 p.m., Sims said.

The Bennette Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene of a one-vehicle accident on Old Houston Road near Payne Road after 11 p.m. Sunday. The woman driver of the vehicle, which contained a child safety seat and infant clothing, was unable to inform emergency response personnel whether a child had been in the vehicle at the time of the vehicle rollover.

“We contacted the Grangerland Volunteer Fire Department for assistance and the use of a thermal imaging camera,” Bennette Volunteer Fire Department Chief Clayton Brown said. “A search was conducted and it was determined that no child had been in the vehicle.”

Montgomery County Hospital District EMS transported the woman to Kingwood Hospital in stable condition.
