Cleveland Lady Indians rolling by opponents

The Cleveland Lady Indians Basketball Team is undefeated in district and tried to continue their winning streak last week as they squared up against Liberty and Huffman.

Even though Coach Shiakiea Carter felt worried going into the fourth quarter against Liberty, the Lady Indians still pulled out a comfortable 52-41 win.

“I had to challenge my team and ask them if they wanted it. If they did, then they needed to take it,” said Carter. After going back and forth throughout three quarters of play, Carter’s timeout pep-talk ignited the the Lady Indians’ intensity and led to them putting up a total of 21 fourth quarter points to seal the victory.

“We were out of rhythm all night. I think it was because of the holidays and it hasn’t been a lot of structure, but we did play 10 minutes of good basketball,” said Carter.

Shanta Scott led the team with 15 points. Tariesha Scott followed with 11 points and Reniqua Davis made her presence felt with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Indians didn’t slow down as they came up against Huffman and posted an impressive margin of victory in a 56-36 win. Since this was another road game, the team didn’t waste any time putting it away early.

“It was a good effort. I felt we started slow but picked it up in the second quarter,” said Carter. The Lady Indians surprised onlookers by switching up and playing a two-three zone defense, a move that seemed to confuse the Huffman offense.

Carter’s unexpected call to switch the defense was caught Huffman off guard and the Lady Indians took complete advantage of it. However, Carter was not one to pat herself on the back.

“We really just played within ourselves,” said Carter.

Carla Woods stood out for the Lady Indians with seven steals and five rebounds. Crystal Harrell also got in four steals. Both Scotts led the team in scoring, Tariesha with 16 points and Shanta with 10 points.

The Lady Indians continue district play as they face off against Shepherd on Tuesday, Jan. 13, and Tarkington on Friday, Jan. 16.
