Cleveland Indians successful in district
By WAYNE RHYMES
The Indians have had a tough pre-season playing against some of the better teams in the area. Overall the tribe is 12-6 heading into district play, where they hope to repeat last year’s performance and return to the playoffs.
The Indians opened district play at home against a strong Liberty team. The Liberty Panthers were 10-10 overall and 1-0 in district action, but the Indians didn’t waste any time in securing their first win in district by beating the Panthers 79-50.
“We will not take anyone lightly and let them slip up on us,” said Coach Roderick Broussard after the game.
The Indians jumped on the Panthers from the opening tip. The tribe hounded the Panthers defensively with a press, which gave the boys from south County trouble moving the ball up court.
Cleveland’s defensive strategy effectively took Liberty out of the game by the end of the first quarter. The Panthers had only posted five points to the Indians’ 18.
“Our goal was to jump out fast and prove to them we were the better team early,” said Broussard.
The Indians’ teamwork allowed them to control the game from the start. It was also the Jamaul Ross’ first game back from injury.
Ross finished with 3 points and 7 assists. The show for the Indians belonged to their big man, Cedric Reed, who worked down low and finished with a monstrous 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks.
Kriss Kross added 10 points and seven steals. Marcus Mallett scooped up eight rebounds.
“This win was a total team effort by all the players,” said Broussard.
The Indians kept the level of play up as they took their show over to Huffman for a 60-31 victory. The tribe was so on point that they were up 23 points at halftime.
“We played great defense. Huffman couldn’t handle our press and when they did our man to man was too much,” said Broussard.
The Indians’ defense was so effective at shutting Huffman down that there was only one quarter in which the Falcons were able to post a score in the double digits, and it was a total team effort on the Falcons part to do it.
On the other hand, the Indians had four players who had double-digit scoring. Chazz Carrington returned from sick leave to finish with 15 points.
Big man Cedric Reed had 14 points. Tre Richardson had 13 points and Jaraud Ross had 10 points.
The Indians are 2-0 in district as they head up the freeway to face off against the Shepherd Pirates Tuesday, Jan. 13. Then they go down the street to play the Tarkington Longhorns Friday, Jan. 16.
