Tarkington firefighters have busy Sunday morning

At midnight on Sunday morning, Tarkington firefighters were dispatched to a report of a vehicle on fire on CR 2176.
Tarkington Assistant Chief Dalton Lee Gregory arrived on scene to find a Ford pickup fully involved. The fire was the result of an accident in which the driver, Carroll Kelley of Tarkington, had swerved to miss deer in the road.
Firefighting efforts were hampered by the fact that Mr. Kelley had just filled the truck’s gas tank. Firefighters from both Tarkington stations responded to the fire. The last units did not leave the scene until nearly 3 a.m.
But that was just the start of a busy morning for Tarkington firefighters.
Shortly after 8 a.m., Tarkington First Responders were dispatched to CR 2270 for the report of an 81-year old fall victim. The patient’s injuries were severe enough that they were taken by City of Cleveland ambulance to the heli-pad at Cleveland Police Department and flown to a Houston-area hospital.
Then at approximately 8:45 a.m., Tarkington First Responders were dispatched to the beach on the Trinity River at SH 105 for a report of a 27-year old female that had spilled hot coffee on her hand, causing severe burns.
At nearly the same time, Tarkington firefighters were dispatched to a report of a structure fire on CR 2917 in Sam Houston Lake Estates.
While firefighters on Squad 51 handled the medical call, Assistant Chief Evert Doucette and firefighters on Engine 51 and Tanker 52 responded to the structure fire.
Apparently, the structure burned some time during the night because the fire was down to coals and ashes when they arrived only minutes after the tone.
Due to the suspicious nature of the call, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office and the fire marshal were called to investigate.
